Short answer: you don’t need a VPN to use Stremio for legal streaming. A VPN can add privacy, but it doesn’t make illegal streams legal.

What Stremio is

Stremio is a free media-centre app for computers, phones and TV devices. It organises films and series from add-ons. Its official add-ons and connected services provide catalogues and legal sources, and you can install community add-ons made by third parties. See the Stremio FAQ for details.

When a VPN makes sense

Privacy: a VPN hides which sites and services you connect to from your internet provider.
Public Wi-Fi: it encrypts your traffic on hotel, café or travel networks. See the NCSC guidance on VPNs.
Throttling: if your provider slows down certain kinds of traffic, a VPN can sometimes help, though it can also make your connection slower.

When a VPN doesn’t help

Some community add-ons link to unlicensed copies of films, TV and sport. Watching or sharing pirated content is still illegal in the UK when you use a VPN. A VPN changes how your traffic travels, not what the law says. More in our guide: Is it legal to use a VPN in the UK?

How to use a VPN with Stremio

Install your VPN provider’s app on the same device as Stremio: Windows, Mac, Android, Android TV or Fire TV (see how to install a VPN on a Firestick).
Sign in and connect to a server, ideally in your own country for the best speed.
Open Stremio and play as normal. If playback buffers, try a closer server or a different VPN protocol in the app settings.
On a TV that has no VPN app, you can set up the VPN on your router instead, if your router and provider support it.

If you want a VPN with apps for TV devices, NordVPN and Surfshark both list Android TV and Fire TV apps on their websites. Compare more options on our VPN picks.
