You don’t need a VPN to travel, but it can be useful when you rely on public Wi-Fi or want to log in to UK services from abroad. Here is a checklist to work through before you go.
Why travellers use a VPN
- Hotel, airport and café Wi-Fi: a VPN encrypts traffic between your device and the VPN server, so other people on the same network can’t easily see it. The NCSC guidance on VPNs explains what a VPN does and doesn’t protect.
- Banking and work logins: some UK banks and employers flag or block logins from unfamiliar countries. A VPN or your employer’s own VPN may make access more consistent. Check your bank’s and employer’s rules first.
- Privacy on foreign networks: you may not know how a local network is run or monitored.
Before you leave: checklist
- Check the law at your destination. Some countries restrict or regulate VPNs. Read the UK government’s foreign travel advice for your destination and follow local law.
- Install and sign in at home. App stores and VPN websites can be blocked in some countries, so set everything up before you go.
- Install it on every device you’ll use: phone, laptop and tablet.
- Note your provider’s support options and save the login details in your password manager.
- Turn on the kill switch so your traffic stops if the VPN drops.
- Test it on your home Wi-Fi and on mobile data.
Streaming UK TV abroad
Many UK streaming services, including BBC iPlayer, are for viewing in the UK only, and their terms may forbid using a VPN to get around this. See our guide to BBC iPlayer and VPNs.
What a VPN won’t do
- It won’t protect you from phishing, malware or fake websites. Keep your device updated and use two-step verification.
- It won’t make anything legal that is illegal in the country you’re in.
