If BBC iPlayer stops working while your VPN is on, you’ll usually see a message saying the service is only available in the UK, or videos won’t play. Here is why it happens and what you can try.
First, the rules
BBC iPlayer is available in the UK only, and you need a TV Licence to watch or download BBC programmes on iPlayer, live or on demand. The BBC’s terms say iPlayer is for use in the UK, and it actively blocks many VPN and proxy IP addresses. These fixes are aimed at UK residents whose VPN gets in the way at home, for example on a phone or laptop that keeps the VPN on all the time. Using a VPN to get around the BBC’s location rules from abroad is against its terms of use.
Why iPlayer blocks VPNs
Many people share the IP address of a VPN server, so streaming services can spot and block those addresses. Your device can also give away your location in other ways: through location services on a phone, through your browser’s location setting, or through a DNS or IPv6 leak that bypasses the VPN.
7 fixes to try
- Turn the VPN off for iPlayer. If you are in the UK, you don’t need a VPN to watch iPlayer. Use your VPN’s split-tunnelling feature, if it has one, to exclude the iPlayer app or your browser.
- Connect to a different UK server. If the server you use has been blocked, another UK server may work. Some providers label servers for streaming.
- Clear cookies and cache, or use a private window. iPlayer may remember your earlier location. Sign out, clear site data for bbc.co.uk, and sign back in with the VPN already connected.
- Check location services on mobile. On phones, the iPlayer app may use your device location. Make sure the location it reports matches where you actually are.
- Stop DNS and IPv6 leaks. Turn on your VPN app’s DNS leak protection and, if offered, its IPv6 leak protection or kill switch. Then run a DNS leak test from your provider’s website.
- Update the iPlayer and VPN apps. Older app versions can cause playback errors unrelated to the VPN.
- Ask your VPN provider. Providers’ support teams usually know which servers are currently working with streaming services and can suggest settings.
Which VPNs mention BBC iPlayer?
Some providers, including Surfshark and NordVPN, publish guides on using their apps with streaming services. No VPN can guarantee iPlayer access, because the BBC changes its blocking all the time. We haven’t run our own iPlayer tests, so please check a provider’s current claims and refund policy before you buy.
Still not working?
Turn the VPN off and test iPlayer on its own. If it still fails, the problem isn’t the VPN: check the BBC iPlayer help pages. If you use iPlayer on a Fire TV Stick, see how to set up a VPN on a Firestick.
