If your VPN connects on one network but not another, or won’t connect at all, work through these fixes in order. Most take a minute.

If the VPN fails on Wi-Fi

  1. Sign in to the Wi-Fi first. Hotel, train and café networks often have a login page (captive portal). Disconnect the VPN, open a browser, complete the login, then reconnect.
  2. Change the VPN protocol. Some networks block certain VPN traffic. In your VPN app, switch between WireGuard (or the provider’s own protocol), OpenVPN UDP and OpenVPN TCP. TCP is often more likely to get through restrictive networks.
  3. Try another server. The server you picked may be busy or down.
  4. Restart the router (on your home network) and your device.
  5. Check for blocks. Work, school and some public networks block VPNs on purpose. Use mobile data instead, or ask the network owner.

If the VPN fails on mobile data

  1. Turn off battery or data saver for the VPN app. Saver modes can stop background connections.
  2. Check Private DNS on Android (Settings > Network > Private DNS). A custom setting can clash with some VPNs; try “Automatic”.
  3. Check whether your mobile network allows VPN traffic on your plan, especially on roaming or business plans.
  4. Reinstall the VPN app and allow the VPN permission again when prompted.

Still stuck?

If your VPN regularly fails on public Wi-Fi, a provider with several protocols and 24/7 support may suit you better. NordVPN and Surfshark both list several protocols on their websites.
